Devotion Toward God and Teacher

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 6.23

Meaning · English

When someone holds the deepest devotion for God, and the same devotion for the teacher as for God, these teachings shine clear to such a great-hearted person.

This is about who really understands. Bhakti means devotion: a trusting love that turns toward something. The highest bhakti is toward God, and the same is asked toward the guru, the teacher who hands the teaching on. The two are not ranked. The teacher receives the devotion given to God. In a person like that, everything said before stops being mere words. It shines and becomes clear on its own. The text calls such a person great-souled.

A handwritten note left on the kitchen table by someone you love reads differently from the same note typed by a stranger. The words are identical, but trust fills in the warmth and intent behind them. Devotion to God and teacher works like that trust: the teachings already given become clear because of how they are received.
