A Teaching Kept Close
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 6.22
Meaning · English
The deepest secret of the Vedanta, taught in an earlier age, is not for someone restless, nor for anyone who is not a son or a student.
Vedanta means the end of the Veda: the Upanishads, where its teaching on Brahman, the reality behind everything, is gathered. This teaching is called the highest secret, and it was already being taught in an earlier age, long before Shvetashvatara. Then come two limits. It is not given to a person who is not at peace, whose mind is still churning. Nor is it given to someone with no close bond to the teacher, neither a son nor a student.
A grandmother's recipe that was never written down. She teaches it at the stove to a daughter or an apprentice who stands beside her for months, not to a stranger in a hurry. It needs steady hands and someone who stays. The Upanishad's secret travels the same way, from teacher to a calm learner bound to that teacher.
