Shvetashvatara Upanishad 6.21
Meaning · English
Through the power of his discipline and the god's favor, the knowing Shvetashvatara rightly taught Brahman, the highest purifier, to those beyond life's stages, prized by the gathered seers.
The seer came to know Brahman, the one reality behind everything, through two things working together. The first was discipline, the heat of steady practice and his own long effort. The second was the favor of the god, a gift he could not produce himself. Once he knew it, he taught it carefully to people who had already left behind life's ordinary stages and duties. The teaching is called the highest purifier, something that washes a person clean. It is also one the seers as a group have long valued.
A gardener digs, weeds and waters every morning, yet the sun and the rain are not his to order. The crop needs both. The seer's knowing came the same way. His years of discipline did the digging, and the god's favor was the weather he could only receive.
