Rolling Up the Sky
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 6.20
Meaning · English
Only when people can roll up the sky like a strip of hide will suffering stop for anyone who has not come to know God.
The sentence sets up an impossible task to make its point. Space, the open emptiness that holds everything, cannot be gripped or rolled. Ending sorrow without knowing God is just as impossible. The word for sorrow covers the whole ache of living: loss, fear, restlessness. The word for knowing means direct recognition, not having heard about something. So there is no side door. No other arrangement of life closes sorrow down while God stays unknown.
Picture someone stripping a bed, folding the sheet into a neat square. Now picture them trying the same with the air above the bed: hands close, and there is nothing to fold. Ending sorrow while God stays unknown is that second motion. The hands are busy, but the thing they are working on cannot be gathered up.
