Fire Whose Fuel Is Spent

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 6.19

Meaning · English

He has no parts, does nothing, rests at peace, beyond fault and free of stain: the highest bridge to deathlessness, like a fire whose fuel has burned away.

Most of the words here take something away. Without parts: God is not assembled from pieces, so nothing in him can come apart. Without action: he does not labor or strain. At peace: nothing disturbs him. Beyond fault and free of stain: there is nothing in him to correct and nothing to wash off. Then comes one word of a different kind, a bridge. The one described only by what he lacks is the highest bridge, the one that carries a person across from death to what does not die.

A campfire late at night, after the last log has fallen into coals. No crackling, no smoke, no flames jumping around, yet the coals still glow red and give off steady heat. That is the seer's picture of God: nothing left to consume, nothing stirring, and yet not gone out.
