Refuge in the Inner Light

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 6.18

Meaning · English

He set Brahma in place at the start and handed him the Vedas. That God, whose light shines in our own understanding: wanting freedom, I go to him for refuge.

The seer names the God he turns to by two deeds and one quality. First, this God made Brahma, the creator figure of the old stories, at the very beginning. Second, he passed the Vedas, the sacred hymns, to Brahma. So even the creator and the scriptures come from somewhere further back. The quality is light: this God shows himself as the brightness within a person's own understanding. Then the seer speaks for himself. He wants to be freed, and he takes this God as his shelter.

Think of reading a page by a lamp. The paper and the ink come into view only through its light, yet nobody needs a second lamp to see the lamp. This God is like that light: older than the creator and his books, and also what lets a mind understand them.
