The Keeper Who Answers to None

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 6.17

Meaning · English

He is made of that reality, deathless, settled as ruler, knowing, present everywhere, the keeper of this world. He governs it always; there is no other ground for governing.

The one the seer has been describing is made wholly of that same reality. Nothing in him is borrowed. He does not die. He is settled in the role of ruler, not filling it for a season. He knows, and he reaches everywhere, so no corner of the world is outside his sight. He keeps the world and steers it without a break. And his rule has no outside source. No one appointed him, and no other power could stand in his place.

Think of the heart in a sleeping body. No one wakes it in the morning or tells it when to beat. It keeps every limb supplied through the night, from inside, without stopping. The world has a keeper like that: present all through it, never off duty, and taking its orders from nothing beyond itself.
