Lord of Bondage and Release
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 6.16
Meaning · English
He makes all, knows all, is self-sourced and aware, time's own death, bearer of the qualities, lord of nature and soul, cause of the round, its hold, and release.
The one who builds the world also knows all of it. Nothing made him, so he is his own source. He is even time's master, since time ends in him. Nature here means raw matter, woven from three qualities, and he holds and steers those qualities. He also rules each living soul, the one who knows its body. So both being trapped in the round of births and getting free run through him, and so does everything holding steady in between.
Picture a kite in the wind. The person on the ground lets out string so it climbs, holds it steady so it stays up, tugs it close, and can also open their hand and let it sail off. Every move the kite makes traces back to that one hand. Bondage, continuance and freedom all rest in one hand like that.
