The Swan at the Center
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 6.15
Meaning · English
One swan at the center of this world: it is the fire settled within the waters. Knowing it alone, one passes beyond death. There is no second road.
There is a single presence at the heart of everything. The text calls it the hamsa, the swan, a name the Upanishads give to the self that moves through every living thing. It is also called fire lodged inside water: heat and light sitting where you would least expect them, hidden in their opposite. Death is crossed by one thing only, which is knowing this presence directly. Hearing about it is not enough. The text says flatly that no other road exists.
Think of the pilot light in a gas water heater. A small blue flame sits under a tank full of cold water, out of sight, and nobody thinks about it. Yet every hot shower in the house depends on it. That is the fire in the water: one quiet flame inside the whole world, easy to forget, keeping everything warm.
