Light That Lends Light

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 6.14

Meaning · English

The sun does not shine there, nor moon and stars, nor these lightning flashes, let alone this fire. Everything shines after that one shines; its light lights all this.

"There" is the one cause the seer has been describing. He lists the brightest things a person knows: sun, moon, stars, lightning, and the small fire of a household. None of them can light that cause up or show it to us. The order runs the other way. That one shines first, and everything else shines after it, the way an echo follows a voice. Whatever brightness the sun has is borrowed. So the source cannot be found by aiming a lamp at it, because the lamp itself is lit by it.

Sit in a cinema while the screen shows a blazing desert noon. That painted sun looks bright, yet it gives no light of its own. The lamp in the projector behind you makes every glowing thing on the screen. The screen sun can never turn round and light up that lamp. The cause is the lamp; sun, moon, and fire are the pictures.
