Knowing the Cause, Set Free
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 6.13
नित्यो नित्यानां चेतनश्चेतनानामेको बहूनां यो विदधाति कामान् । तत्कारणं सांख्ययोगाधिगम्यं ज्ञात्वा देवं मुच्यते सर्वपाशैः
Meaning · English
Lasting in what lasts, aware in the aware, one meeting the wishes of many: whoever knows that God, the cause found by discernment and discipline, is freed from every bond.
Three short phrases describe the cause behind everything. It is the steady core inside whatever endures. It is the awareness inside every aware creature, so any knowing at all draws on it. And though it is one, it answers the wants of countless beings. Two ways of reaching it are named: careful discernment, sorting what is real from what is not, and steady inner discipline. Actually knowing this God, not merely hearing about it, releases a person from every bond that holds them.
Picture a fishing line wound into a snarled ball. Tugging at the loops only pulls them tighter. Find the single end the whole line runs from, and the snarl can be worked loose, loop by loop. The loops are the many bonds. That one end is the cause. Knowing where everything begins is what undoes the knots.

जो टिकने वालों में टिका है, चेतन में चेतना है, और एक होकर भी अनेकों की इच्छाएँ पूरी करता है, विवेक और साधना से जाने गए उस कारणरूप ईश्वर को जो जान लेता है, वह हर बंधन से छूट जाता है।
तीन छोटे वाक्यांश सबके पीछे के कारण का वर्णन करते हैं। वह हर टिकने वाली चीज़ के भीतर का स्थिर केंद्र है। वह हर चेतन प्राणी के भीतर की चेतना है, इसलिए कोई भी जानना उसी से होता है। और एक होकर भी वह अनगिनत प्राणियों की चाहों को पूरा करता है। उस तक पहुँचने के दो मार्ग बताए गए हैं: सावधान विवेक, जो सच को झूठ से छाँटकर अलग करता है, और स्थिर भीतरी साधना। इस ईश्वर को सचमुच जानना, केवल उसके बारे में सुनना नहीं, मनुष्य को उसे बाँधने वाले हर बंधन से मुक्त कर देता है।
कल्पना कीजिए कि मछली पकड़ने की डोर उलझकर एक गुच्छा बन गई है। फंदों को खींचने से वे और कस जाते हैं। वह एक सिरा खोज लीजिए जहाँ से पूरी डोर निकलती है, तो उलझन फंदा-फंदा करके सुलझाई जा सकती है। ये फंदे ही अनेक बंधन हैं। वह एक सिरा ही कारण है। सब कुछ कहाँ से शुरू होता है, यह जानना ही गाँठें खोलता है।
