Seed Spread Into Many
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 6.12
Meaning · English
He alone rules the many that cannot act; he makes one seed into many forms. The steady who see him within themselves have lasting joy, and no others.
The many things of the world do not move on their own. Left to themselves, they stay still. One alone holds them and directs them. From a single source he brings out endless variety. Then comes who benefits. Those who are steady, not easily shaken, look and find him seated inside their own self, not far off. For them the happiness lasts. Others do not have it.
A marionette lies in a heap on the table, strings slack. When the puppeteer's hand lifts the bar, the limbs walk, wave and bow. None of them moves itself; one hand moves them all. That maps to the single ruler of the many still things, and the steady find that hand within themselves, not somewhere above the stage.
