One Witness in Every Being

Shvetashvatara Upanishad 6.11

एको देवः सर्वभूतेषु गूढः सर्वव्यापी सर्वभूतान्तरात्मा । कर्माध्यक्षः सर्वभूताधिवासः साक्षी चेता केवलो निर्गुणश्च

Meaning · English

One God lies concealed in every creature, filling all things, the inner self of every being. He watches over all action, lives in all, sees, knows, stands alone, without qualities.

There is one God, and he is inside every living thing, though out of sight. He is not in one place. He reaches through everything, and he is the self at the core of each creature. He presides over every action, and every being is where he lives. He sees all of it, he is the one who is aware, he stands alone, and no quality, no color, size or mood, attaches to him. He is present everywhere yet touched by nothing he lives in.

Every lamp, fan and fridge in a house runs on the same current, carried inside walls where no one sees it. The current does not turn warm with the heater or bright with the bulb. That is the picture: one presence running unseen through every being, behind all it does, while taking on none of its qualities.

एक ही परमेश्वर हर प्राणी में छिपा है, सब में व्याप्त है, हर जीव की अंतरात्मा है। वह हर कर्म का साक्षी है, सब में बसता है, देखता है, जानता है, अकेला है, गुणों से रहित है।

एक ही परमेश्वर है, और वह हर जीवित प्राणी के भीतर है, यद्यपि दिखाई नहीं देता। वह किसी एक स्थान पर नहीं है। वह सब कुछ में व्याप्त है, और हर प्राणी के अंतर में बसी आत्मा वही है। हर कर्म उसी की देखरेख में होता है, और हर जीव उसका निवास है। वह यह सब देखता है, वही है जो सचेत है, वह अकेला है, और कोई गुण, न रंग, न आकार, न मनोभाव, उससे नहीं जुड़ता। वह सर्वत्र उपस्थित है, फिर भी जिसमें वह बसता है उससे अछूता रहता है।

घर की हर बत्ती, पंखा और फ्रिज एक ही बिजली से चलते हैं, जो दीवारों के भीतर बहती है जहाँ उसे कोई नहीं देखता। बिजली न हीटर के साथ गर्म होती है, न बल्ब के साथ उजली। यही चित्र है: एक ही सत्ता जो हर प्राणी में अनदेखी बहती है, उसके हर कर्म के पीछे रहती है, पर उसका कोई गुण नहीं अपनाती।
