Hidden in His Own Silk
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 6.10
Meaning · English
As a spider wraps itself in its own threads, the one God, by his own nature, hides himself inside strands spun from primal matter. May he let us merge into Brahman.
One God, and no second, does all of this. The threads come from primal matter, the raw stuff that every shape and body is made of. He pulls them out and winds them around himself. The winding is his own nature at work, not something forced on him. The result is a world that is real material and also a cover: what we see is the weave, not the weaver. The last line turns to prayer, asking that the speakers be merged into Brahman.
A stage magician sets off a thick cloud of colored smoke and steps into the middle of it. The audience watches the smoke curl and glow, and it is really there, but it is also why they can no longer see him. Nature works the same way: made by him, real, and the very thing that hides its maker.
