The Mind Standing Still

Bhagavad Gita 2.53

Meaning · English

When your mind, no longer drawn by the many sayings of scripture, stands steady and unmoving in divine absorption, then you will attain yoga.

Three ideas carry this. Shruti is what has been heard, here the Vedic teaching, and the glossary says the part meant is its fruitive sections, the ones promising rewards for rituals. Buddhi is the intellect, the part of you that decides and judges. Samadhi is divine consciousness, a settled absorption in God. Yoga is union, the link the whole teaching aims at. Krishna says that when Arjuna's intellect is no longer pulled around by those promises and sits steady in samadhi, yoga is reached. The text repeats the word for steadfast twice, once for the intellect not wandering and once for it remaining fixed. The reason follows from the verses before: Arjuna has just been told to cross the quagmire of delusion, and a mind still bargaining for results keeps tugging in many directions. Krishna asks him to let the pulling stop. Shankara reads the passage as turning away from ritual toward knowledge of the self. Ramanuja reads samadhi as steady meditation on the Lord. Madhva reads it as a firm, devoted fixing of the mind on Vishnu.

A boat tied to one post stays put, while a boat cut loose swings with every gust and current. The loose boat is the intellect chasing each promised reward. The post is samadhi, where the mind rests and stops drifting.

1. Tonight, pick one thing you are chasing, such as a raise, a result or someone's approval. Write down the reward you hope for. 2. Sit for five minutes in a quiet spot and notice how often your mind jumps toward that reward. 3. Each time it jumps, gently bring it back to your breath or a single word you love. 4. Afterward, note whether the mind felt calmer when it stayed in one place.

A mother sits in a hospital corridor while her son is in a scan. Her phone offers a dozen opinions: a forum says one thing, a cousin another, an article promises a cure. Each pulls her mind in a different direction, and she feels more frightened with every one. The verse would change this moment in steps. She would notice the pulling for what it is. She would put the phone down. She would fix her mind on one steady thing, a prayer, her breathing, or the doctor's actual words when they come. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind fed many conflicting promises grows restless, and a mind given one place to rest slows down. The verse does not promise that the scan will be clear, that her fear will vanish or that grief will not come. It also does not replace the doctor, whose word she still needs. What it offers is a mind that stays in one place while she waits.
