Where Mortals Sing and Fight

Atharva Veda 12.1.41

Meaning · English

On her mortals sing and dance with loud cries; on her they fight, war-cry and drum sounding. May that Earth drive off our rivals and leave me without one.

Atharvan names everything people do on the ground with their voices and bodies. They sing. They dance and shout. They go to war, the battle cry goes up, the drum is beaten. The Earth carries all of it, feast and fight alike, without choosing. Then comes the request. A rival is someone who claims the same place; the word was first used for a co-wife. He asks the Earth that bears both sides to push such rivals back and leave him with none.

A courtyard floor holds a wedding dance one evening and a family quarrel the next morning. The same stones bear both sets of feet. The Earth is that floor for everyone alive. Because she already carries the singer and the fighter alike, the seer turns to her, the ground under both, to end his quarrel.
