A Home for Many Tongues

Meaning · English
Carrying people of many speeches and many customs, each as fits its home, may Earth, like a steady cow that does not kick, yield me a thousand streams of wealth.
The Earth carries people who do not talk alike and do not live by the same rules, and she keeps each where its home is. 'Of different speech' means separate languages. 'Of many dharmas' means separate customs and duties, though modern readers often hear 'many faiths' in it. The difference does not trouble her. The prayer then asks her for wealth in a thousand streams, given steadily, the way a settled cow lets down her milk without kicking the pail.
Think of an old apartment block. Through its windows come a dozen languages, the smells of different kitchens, different prayers at dusk. One water main runs under all of it, and every tap fills the same way. The Earth is that building. She does not sort the people living in her before she feeds them.
