She Carries Every Weight
Atharva Veda 12.1.48
Meaning · English
Carrying the foolish, carrying the heavy, she endures the end of the good and the wicked alike. Earth, of one mind with the boar, parts for the wild hog.
Earth carries whoever is on her. The dull-witted and the burdensome are held as surely as anyone. When the good and the wicked die, she takes in both and bears it with patience. Some readers take the word for 'end' as 'resting place', and the ground is the same either way. Then comes a close, ordinary scene. A wild boar roots in the soil, and Earth is of one mind with it, loosening so it can dig.
Picture an old wooden bench on a railway platform. A commuter sits on it, then a man sleeping off a drink, then a mother weighed down with shopping bags. The bench takes each weight without asking who they are. Earth is that bench, holding the foolish and the burdened, the good and the bad, with no sorting.
