Words Sweet as Honey

Atharva Veda 12.1.58

Meaning · English

What I speak, I speak sweet as honey; what I look upon, they hold me dear. I am bright, I am quick; I strike down the others who rage.

The seer says that every word he speaks comes out sweet, the way honey is sweet. Whatever he looks at looks back on him with fondness. Then he names what he carries: brightness, a strength others can see, and quickness, the push to move and act. With these he puts down those who come at him shaking with anger. Gentleness for the many, firmness for the few who rage; a child of the Earth holds both.

A sheepdog moves through the flock without a nip, nosing lambs along, and they press close to it. When a stray dog comes snarling at the fence, the same animal plants its feet and drives it off. One creature, two faces: the sweet speech and welcome gaze for those around, the brightness and quickness turned on the one who rages.
