A Firm Place to Stand

Atharva Veda 12.1.63

Meaning · English

Mother Earth, set me down in goodness, firmly placed. Wise one, in harmony with the sky, set me in good fortune and in well-being.

The hymn's last request is for footing. The singer asks his mother to set him down in goodness and keep him firmly placed there. He calls her wise one, a title normally given to poets and seers, and asks her to act in agreement with the sky, so that earth and heaven work as a pair. Then he names two gifts: fortune, the brightness of a life going well, and well-being, the plain fact of thriving and having enough.

A gardener moves a seedling into new ground and presses the soil firmly around its roots so it stands upright and does not lean in the first wind. Only after that do sun and rain make it grow. The singer asks Earth for the same order: steady footing first, then, with the sky's help, a life that flourishes.
