Meaning · English

She who arises together with the breath of life, who is made of all the gods, who entered the hidden cave of the heart and stays there, who came to be among the elements. This is that.

Yama is still describing what Nachiketas must come to know. Three words carry the verse. Aditi comes from a-diti, 'not cut, not bound': the unlimited one. Prana is breath, the life-force that moves in every living thing. Guha is a cave, a hidden place, and here it means the heart. Yama says this unbounded one arises together with prana, so wherever breath begins, she begins. She is 'made of all the gods', meaning the powers that run the world, such as fire, wind and sun, are her forms. She entered the cave of the heart and stays there. And she came to be among the bhutas, the elements, the things that have taken shape. The verse is saying that one source shows itself as life, as the gods, as the elements, and as the quiet inner place. Yama gives this to a boy who has just met death, so that he sees what does not end when bodies do. Shankara reads Aditi as Hiranyagarbha, the first living power, which takes in all experience and rises with prana. He reads the heart as the place where that power is known. Yama asks Nachiketas to look for it in the nearest place there is: his own breath and heart.

A lamp stands in the middle of a house with many windows. From outside, each window shows its own square of light, and each looks like a separate lamp. Inside there is one flame. The windows are breath, the gods and the elements, each a separate opening, and the single flame is the one source that shows in every one of them.

1. Tonight, sit for two minutes and follow your breath without changing it. Notice where you feel it most: nostrils, chest or belly. 2. Rest a hand on your chest and find your heartbeat. Stay with it for a minute, and remember that Yama places the hidden one here. 3. Next time you drink water or feel the sun on your skin, say quietly: this too is one of the elements, and the same source stands behind it.

A woman sits in a dark nursery at three in the morning, feeding her newborn. She has slept little and her mind is running through tomorrow's tasks. Then she hears the baby's breathing, small and quick, and without deciding to, she matches it with her own slower breath. Her shoulders drop a little. She feels the baby's warm weight against her chest and the beat of her own heart. For a moment she is not managing anything. She is only present with breath, heart and warmth. Yama's teaching points exactly there: one life shows itself in the breath, in the body made of earth's own elements, and in the quiet place of the heart. Ordinary experience confirms that slowing the breath steadies a racing body. Yama's claim goes further, saying the source behind all this is Aditi, and the text offers that as its own teaching. The verse does not make the tiredness go away, and it does not replace a doctor if the baby or the mother is unwell.
