Meaning · English
Agni, the knower of all that is born, lies hidden in the two fire-sticks, carried with care like a child in the womb by its mother. Day after day, men who are awake and bring offerings should praise him. This is that.
Three words carry the verse. Jatavedas, a name for Agni, means one who knows all that is born. Aranis are the two fire-sticks: a lower block and an upper rod, rubbed together to make the sacred flame. Havis is the offering poured into the fire. Yama tells Nachiketas that fire sits unseen inside the wood, the way a child sits unseen in a pregnant woman. The sticks must be handled with care, as the mother is. Then the fire comes out. It is praised each day by people who are awake and who bring offerings. The reason Yama says it follows the verses before: the hidden one that enters the heart (2.1.6 and 2.1.7) is hard to see, so he gives a visible case of something present but unseen until it is drawn out. The listener is asked to be wakeful, to tend, and to offer, daily. Shankara reads Agni here as standing for Brahman, the one reality behind everything, which is present in all things and shown by effort and attention. The closing words, 'this is that', point back to what Nachiketas asked about.
Think of a cold match head, or flint in a pocket. Nothing shows. Yet strike it with care and light appears from what looked dead. The hidden fire in wood is like that: the thing sought is already inside, and patient, careful work brings it out.
1. Tonight, light a lamp or candle, or simply watch one flame, for two minutes. Notice that the light was not in the room until it was made. 2. Pick one small daily act, such as setting aside the first sip of tea or a minute of quiet, and give it to what you hold sacred. 3. Do it at the same hour for a week. Notice how awake you are during it, and whether your mind wanders.
A grandmother crouches in a dark village kitchen before dawn, blowing gently on a bed of ash. For a moment there is nothing. Then a red point glows, and she feeds it a few dry twigs, one at a time. Too much breath or too much wood and it dies. She does it every morning, and her hands know how. The verse speaks to that moment in three steps. First, what looks like ash may hold a live coal. Second, the coal responds to patient, gentle handling, not force. Third, the work is repeated daily by someone who is awake to it. Ordinary experience confirms the last part: a habit done with attention differs from one done half asleep. Yama's claim about fire as a form of the unseen Brahman is the text's teaching, and it is offered as such. The verse does not promise that attention will always bring light quickly, and it does not remove tiredness, grief or the cold of the morning. It asks only for the tending.
