Meaning · English
With the two hands cupped and joined, the lotus seat bound firmly, the chin pressed hard against the chest, and the mind resting on That, a man again and again drives the downward wind upward and presses the drawn-in breath down. By the force of shakti he reaches knowledge beyond compare.
Start with the name. Padma is the lotus and asana is a seat, so padmasana is the lotus seat: the legs folded into the shape of petals around the hips. The verse does not describe the folding. It assumes the seat is already known and says it must be bound firmly, meaning steady and not loosely draped. The commentary reads the foot placement as each ankle crossing to the opposite side of the seam of the perineum, the left ankle to the right side and the right ankle to the left. The verse then adds four things to the seat. The hands are cupped and joined, like the two halves of a closed box. The chin is pressed hard into the chest. The mind dwells on That, the one object of meditation. And the breath is worked. Apana is the tradition's name for the wind that moves downward from the base of the trunk. The verse says it is drawn up again and again. Prana, the breath taken in, is pressed down. This is the tradition's account of the breath, not an anatomical description. The reason is the fruit. The text says that through shakti, a force it does not explain further here, the man reaches knowledge beyond compare. The verse gives no counts and no length of hold. Anyone who holds the breath for long, or forces the knees into the lotus, can be hurt, and this is learnt beside a teacher. Today's classes usually rest the hands on the knees rather than cupping them together. Pain in the knees or a light head means stopping.
A man in his sixties, who sat cross-legged on a workshop floor for decades, finds that his knees object when he tries to fold into the lotus. That is the commonest modern fact about this seat. It asks for a lot of outward rotation at the hips, and when the hips cannot give it, the knees take the twist. A good family doctor would say that a comfortable cross-legged seat serves the purpose of sitting still, and that forcing the full lotus is a known way to injure the knee. The chin pressed to the chest is a real posture, and it can make the breath feel different in the throat and chest. Long holds with it can cause dizziness, and people with heart or blood pressure problems need medical advice first. Lifting the pelvic floor as the breath is held loosely resembles an ordinary pelvic floor contraction, but apana and prana have no match in physiology. They belong to the tradition's own account. Nothing established shows that this practice brings knowledge beyond compare. The text states that as its claim.
