Meaning · English
Place the right foot on the left thigh and the left foot on the right thigh. Then, in the western way, hold the two big toes firmly with the hands. Set the chin on the chest and look at the tip of the nose. This is called padmasana, the destroyer of ailments for the self-restrained.
Padma means lotus and asana means seat. The name comes from the folded legs, which are likened to a lotus. The verse is a complete recipe in four parts. The first is the legs: the right foot rests on the left thigh, then the left foot on the right thigh. The second is the hands. They hold the two big toes firmly, and the verse says this is done in the western way. The tradition faces east when it speaks of direction, so the front of the body is east and the back is west. The western way therefore means the hands go behind the back, each reaching round to the toe on its own side. The third is the head and eyes: the chin is set on the chest and the gaze rests on the tip of the nose. The fourth is the name and the claim. The Pradipika calls the seat padmasana and says it destroys ailments for the yamins, those who practise restraint. That claim is the only reason the verse gives. It offers no mechanism and no method of breathing. The text teaches the seat as a steady posture for people who have taken up a disciplined practice. It asks for a firm, locked sitting, a chin lowered to the chest and a fixed gaze. It also asks the practitioner to do these things with care and effort, not by force.
1. Sit on the mat with both legs straight in front of you. Before anything else, warm up the hips and knees: rock the knees side to side, circle the ankles, and hug each knee in turn. Breathe naturally through the nose. 2. Bend one knee. Hold that foot and shin in your hands. Breathe out and lay the foot high on the opposite thigh, close to the hip crease, with the sole facing up. 3. Breathe in, and lengthen the spine. Bend the other knee. Breathe out and lift that foot over the first shin onto the other thigh, again high and sole up. The first foot is now underneath and the second is on top. Both knees move down toward the floor. 4. Rest the backs of the hands on the knees, palms up or down. 5. Sit tall and still. Let the crown of the head rise and the shoulders soften. Breathe slowly through the nose, in and out at an easy pace. Stay for only a few breaths at first, and stay longer only when the knees are quiet. 6. If there is any pain in the knees at any moment, stop. Never force the lotus. Sit in the half lotus, with one foot on the thigh and the other tucked under the opposite leg, or in a simple cross-legged seat. 7. To come out, breathe out. Lift the feet down one at a time, gently, and stretch the legs straight in front of you. 8. Rest. Next time begin with the other leg on top, so that both hips are worked evenly. Fine points: the work happens in the hips, not in the knees, so the foot goes onto the thigh only as far as the hip allows. The text's own form is different. It holds the toes with the hands behind the back and also presses the chin to the chest and looks at the nose tip. The lesson shows the simpler modern way, with the hands on the knees and an upright head. Today the text's form is taught as a later stage, usually with a teacher.
The shape asks the hips to turn outward very far. The deep hip muscles that rotate the thigh outward, and the inner thigh muscles, lengthen. The ankles and the front of the shins also stretch. If the hips cannot turn enough, the twist moves into the knee, which is why the hips must be warmed first and the knee must stay quiet. Once the shape is made, the crossed legs form a wide, low base. The pelvis sits steadily and the spine can stand tall without much effort from the back. The legs stay put, so the body has little reason to fidget. The breath is slow and nasal because the seat is for stillness. A slow breath settles the ribs and belly, and the mind has less to follow. The tradition's own account is that this firm seat steadies the body so the practitioner can turn inward. The text adds the chin on the chest and the nose-tip gaze as aids for fixing the attention. The lesson leaves them out and keeps the head upright.
The Pradipika says padmasana destroys ailments for those who practise restraint. That is the whole of its promise in the verse, and it names no ailment. It is the tradition's claim, not a measured result, and no cure is offered here. The verse gives no further reasons. The commentary printed with this section adds no separate reason for this seat. Elsewhere the same text values a firm seat as the ground for the practices that follow, which is why the manuals teach several seats with such care.
A tailor in a village shop sits cross-legged on a raised platform from morning until evening, and at the end of the day his knees and hips do not complain. This kind of floor sitting is widely understood to keep the hips mobile. The full lotus is a different matter. It takes a lot of outward turn in the hip, and many adults simply do not have it. Forcing it moves the strain into the knee, and doctors and teachers agree on that point. What is well established is that sitting upright with an easy breath calms the body and gives the mind something steady to rest on. What has no evidence is the claim that this one seat destroys ailments, and a reader should treat it as the tradition's claim. The nose-tip gaze with the chin down can tire the eyes and neck, and this is why the simpler seat is taught first. The old ideas of prana and the nadis have no counterpart in physiology.
Padmasana is learnt with a teacher, not from a page, because the knees can be hurt without warning. Take particular care, or leave the full lotus out, with any knee pain or injury, a torn cartilage, a recent knee or hip surgery, stiff hips or ankles, or numbness in the feet. Late pregnancy, sciatica and a sore lower back also call for a gentler seat and a teacher's advice. The hands-behind-the-back form with the chin pressed down puts a load on the shoulders and neck and is not for a beginner. Never push a foot into place. Stop at the first pain or tingling, and take the half lotus or a simple cross-legged seat instead. This page is not medical advice.
The gentlest form is the simple cross-legged seat, with a folded blanket under the hips so the knees can fall lower than the pelvis. The next form is the half lotus: one foot goes high on the opposite thigh and the other rests under the opposite knee. Switch which foot is on top each time. Blocks or folded cloths under the knees give support if they hang in the air. A beginner can build up slowly: warm up, sit in half lotus on each side, then try the full seat for a few breaths. The fuller form, from the text, holds the toes with the hands crossed behind the back and lowers the chin. It is taught later and only with a teacher.
Forcing the foot onto the thigh with the knee unwilling: stop, and let the hip do the turning. Placing the foot low near the knee: bring it high toward the hip crease. Sitting on a rounded lower back: raise the hips on a folded blanket and lengthen the spine. Holding the breath while straining: breathe out as you place each foot and keep the breath slow and even. Always crossing the same leg on top: switch the leg every time. Staying through pain, or counting on a fixed time: come out as soon as the knees speak.
