Press one heel firmly into the root place between anus and genitals. Set the other foot above the genitals. Rest the chin steady on the chest, still as a post, the senses held in. Fix the gaze unmoving between the brows. This is called the accomplished seat, the breaker of the door to liberation.
Take the name apart first. Siddha means accomplished, perfected, one who has arrived. Asana means seat. So the name is the accomplished seat, the posture of someone who has already reached the goal, or the one that leads there. The verse then lists the parts. One heel presses firmly into the root place, the soft area between the anus and the genitals. The other foot sits above the genitals. The chin rests steady on the chest. The body is still like a post, which is the sense of the word for a fixed pillar. The senses are restrained, drawn back from the outside world. The eyes do not wander but stay fixed on the point between the brows. Then comes the claim. The Pradipika says this seat breaks open the door to moksha, liberation. The door is shown as closed, and the seat as what splits it. The text teaches it first and at length because it names it the chief of the seats. It asks three things of a practitioner: a firm and exact placing of the feet, a head and spine held without sway, and a gaze and senses that stop moving. The commentary adds that other schools use other names here, and gives differing foot placements for some of them.
1. Sit on the floor with both legs straight in front of you. Let the spine rise and breathe naturally through the nose. 2. Breathe out and bend one knee. Draw that heel in close to the body, at the centre, so it rests against the soft place between the genitals and the anus. The commentary reads the left heel here, and the lesson names no side, so choose one and keep to it for this sitting. 3. Breathe out again and bend the other knee. Place that heel just above the first, above the genitals, against the pubic bone. The ankles lie one over the other, with the lower heel still in place. Rest your hands on your knees. 4. Breathe in and lift through the crown of the head. Sit tall and still. Draw the chin a little in, and soften the gaze. 5. Stay and let the breath run easily. The text asks for a gaze fixed between the brows. The lesson teaches a soft gaze, eyes half open or lightly closed, resting there without strain. Begin with a minute or two. The verse gives no time. 6. If your knees lift high above your hips, sit on a folded blanket. 7. To leave, breathe out and unfold the legs slowly, one at a time, and stretch them out in front. 8. Rest, and let the legs relax. On another day, change which heel is underneath, so both hips are used. The heel at the centre presses only as firmly as is comfortable. The text says firmly, but a bruised or numb perineum is not the aim. Let the knees fall toward the floor by their own weight. Keep the lower back long and do not push the chin to the chest by force.
The shape asks the hips to turn outward and the knees to fold deeply. The muscles on the inner thighs and around the hips lengthen. The ankles bend and rest against each other. The back muscles hold the spine upright, and the chin drawn in keeps the back of the neck long. If the hips are stiff, the knees rise and the pelvis tips back. The lower back then rounds. A folded blanket under the sitting bones lets the pelvis tip forward, and the spine can stack naturally. The breath stays natural. The verse gives no counts and no holds here, so the breath is simply left easy. A tall, supported torso leaves the belly and ribs free to move. For the mind, stillness comes from a stable base. Both legs are locked in, the hands are placed, and the head is steady. With nothing to adjust, attention can settle. The fixed gaze gives the eyes one task. The tradition's own account is different. It says the heel at the root place and the steady chin shape how prana, the vital current, moves along the central channel, the sushumna. That is the tradition's account of what the seat does, not physiology.
The Pradipika's own promise in the verse is one claim: that the seat breaks open the door to liberation, moksha. It makes no promise about the body, no cure and no counted result. The claim comes with the conditions it names: a firm heel, a steady chin, a still body, restrained senses and an unwavering gaze. The verse says that the seat done in this way is what opens the door. The verse also gives the name its weight. It calls the seat siddhasana, the accomplished seat. The next verses, printed with this reading, show it is named differently by different schools. The commentary notes this to show that the pose is well known and has the support of many.
A tailor in a small shop has sat cross-legged on his floor board since he was a boy. At fifty-five, he moves from this seat to standing without a thought, though his neighbor, who sat in chairs, cannot. Today's understanding agrees on one point: the hips, knees and ankles keep their range when they are used in deep folded positions regularly, and are lost more easily when they are not. Sitting upright on the floor also asks the back and trunk to hold the body. Slow, easy breathing in a calm, supported posture is well accepted as settling. The pose also demands a lot of the knees and ankles, and forcing the heels into place is a recognized way to strain them. Modern teachers therefore add blankets and offer easier forms. The verse's insistence on a firm heel is not a rule of modern anatomy. The liberation claim is outside what medicine can say anything about. The channels and prana have no match in anatomy, and the tradition's account of them stands as the tradition's own.
This page is not medical advice, and a teacher can correct what a page cannot. This pose is learnt with a teacher, not from a page. Stop at any pain, numbness or pins and needles. Take particular care with knee, hip or ankle trouble, or a recent surgery there. Sciatica or a lower back or disc problem may call for a high seat or for leaving this form out. Pressure on the perineum may not suit those with pelvic or groin pain, haemorrhoids, or a recent operation in the area. In pregnancy, ask a teacher who knows pregnancy before trying it. Anyone with high blood pressure should keep the breath easy and never hold it. Never force the knees down or the heel in. If a foot goes numb, unfold at once. Sit for short periods and build slowly. The old texts praise very long sitting, but taken literally it can harm the body.
For a stiff beginner, sit on a folded blanket or a firm cushion until the knees fall below the hips. Place a rolled cloth or block under each knee if they hover. Cross the ankles loosely in front, as in an easy seat, without placing the heels, until the hips open. A middle form puts the first heel at the centre and rests the second foot in front of the shin, not above it. The full form places the second heel above the first, as in the lesson. Change which heel is underneath from one day to the next. The commentary reads the left heel at the root place, and the other side is the mirror.
Sitting on the floor with the pelvis tipped back and the lower back rounded: raise the seat on a blanket until the spine can stand. Forcing the knees down with the hands: let them fall by their own weight and use blocks. Pushing the heel hard into the perineum: press only as firmly as is comfortable. Jutting the chin forward or crushing it into the chest: draw it a little in and keep the neck long. Staring hard with strained eyes: keep the gaze soft. Holding the breath: keep it easy and natural. Staying until the legs go numb: unfold sooner and rest.
