Subtle Sorrows Traced Back

Yoga Sutras 2.10

Meaning · English

Once these causes of suffering have grown fine and faint, they are removed by being sent back to the place they arose from.

Four words carry the sutra. Te means "these": the hindrances, the causes of suffering named in the sutras just before. Sukshma means subtle, fine, hard to see. Heya means to be removed, left behind. Pratiprasava is the key word. Prasava is a birth or a flowing forth. Prati means back against. So it is a flowing back, a return to the source. The plain sense is this. The hindrances have grown thin. They no longer show as open anger or grasping. They sit as faint tendencies. Patanjali teaches that at this stage they are removed by running them back to the source they came out of. Why say it? The sutras before name ignorance as the root of suffering, with the other hindrances growing from it. Some hindrances can be weakened by effort. The fine ones slip past effort because there is nothing coarse left to push against. This sutra answers that gap. Vyasa's Bhashya, the oldest commentary, reads it so: the fine hindrances are like burnt seeds. They no longer sprout, and they dissolve along with the mind when it returns to its own cause. The commentators on the whole follow this line.

A spool of thread has been pulled loose and lies in loops across the floor. Chasing each loop gets nowhere. Winding the thread back onto the spool, loop by loop, clears the floor. The loops are the faint hindrances. The spool is the place they came from.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with a small irritation or worry from the day. 2. Ask what lay underneath it. A wish, a fear, a picture of yourself. 3. Ask what lay under that, and go back one step at a time until the questions run out. 4. Notice only where the trail leads. Do not argue with it or try to fix it.
