Meditation Stills Their Stirring
Yoga Sutras 2.11
Meaning · English
When the hindrances are stirring and fully active in the mind, meditation is what puts them away.
Three words carry this sutra. Dhyana is meditation: attention held on one object without a break, from a root meaning to contemplate. Heya means what is to be left behind, set aside. Vritti is a turning, a movement of the mind, like a wave rising on water. The word "their" points back to the hindrances named just before, the roots of suffering. Patanjali teaches that these hindrances do not only sit quietly. They also turn and move in the mind as anger, craving, fear and confusion. In that active form, he says, steady meditation sets them aside. The reason is practical. The sutra before it gave a way to deal with the subtle hindrances, those that lie dormant. Something is needed for the loud ones too, the ones already moving. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, reads the sutra as speaking of the hindrances in their coarse, stirring forms, and he takes meditation as the means that stills them. The later commentators follow him in the main. Patanjali's claim is modest: what is active can be met by sustained attention.
A pond is stirred with a stick, and the water turns brown. Pull the stick out and hold still, and the mud slowly sinks. The stirring is the active turning of the hindrances. Meditation is the holding still, and the water does not need to be fought.
1. Choose a time today when you feel a strong wave of irritation, worry or wanting. Later, sit for five minutes in a quiet place. 2. Rest your attention on one plain thing, such as your breath at the nostrils or a candle flame. 3. When the mind wanders into the stirring, note it and return to the object, gently. 4. At the end, notice how the stirring rose and fell, without judging it.
