Roots of Stored Action

Yoga Sutras 2.12

Meaning · English

The store of past action has its root in the afflictions. It bears fruit in a life seen now, or in a life not yet seen.

Three terms carry the sutra. Klesha means an affliction, a thing that troubles the mind; mula means a root. Karmashaya joins karma, action, with ashaya, a place where something rests. It is the store that deeds leave behind. Drishta means seen, adrishta unseen, and janma-vedaniya means what is felt as a birth, a life. So the sutra says this. The store left by action grows out of the afflictions as its root. It ripens either in the life now visible or in a life not yet visible. Patanjali says this because the earlier sutras name the afflictions and say how to thin them. He now shows why they matter. They are not only passing moods. Acts done under them leave deposits, and those deposits shape what comes later. This answers how suffering keeps renewing itself. Vyasa's Bhashya takes the store to be the merit and demerit gathered by deeds driven by craving, anger and confusion, and says it may ripen in this birth or a later one. The commentators broadly agree on this. Where they differ is only in how they describe the way it ripens, not in the root.

A dandelion, cut at the top, comes back in a week. Its root is still in the ground, and the root sends up the next leaf. The afflictions are that root. The stored deeds are the leaves that keep returning, now or in some later season, until the root itself is dealt with.

1. Choose one ordinary action today, such as a sharp reply, a purchase, or a delay in doing something you dread. 2. Afterward, sit for two minutes and ask what was underneath it: wanting, fear, irritation, or a false sense of who you are. 3. Write the answer in a single line. 4. Within the week, read your lines together and notice which root appears most often.
