Full, So Nowhere to Roam

Bhagavata Purana 11.25.36

Meaning · English

The soul, freed from its bound soul-state and from the gunas born of the mind's deep impressions, is full in me, who am Brahman. It no longer moves about, either outside or within.

Three words carry the verse. Jiva is the individual living being, the one who feels bound, hungry and unfinished. Ashaya is what lies deposited in the mind: leftover impressions from past acts and desires. Purna means full, with nothing missing. Krishna says the gunas are born from those deposits. They are not simply out in the world. Sattva, rajas and tamas keep rising because the mind keeps stocking them. Krishna then says the jiva is freed from the gunas and also from being a bound jiva, the self that thinks of itself as lacking. What remains is full in Brahman, which Krishna calls himself. Because it is full, it does not roam. Outside means chasing objects. Inside means chasing thoughts, plans and old grievances. The commentators take the two together as all restless movement of the mind. Krishna teaches this here because Uddhava, about to lose his friend, needs to know where the climb ends. It ends in a settled fullness, not in a better mood. The verse asks the listener to see wandering as a sign of hunger, and to look for the fullness it was hunting.

A man who has just eaten a full meal walks past the bakery without slowing, and does not open the cupboards again. Nothing forbids him. He simply has no hunger to search with. The freed soul is that man, and its fullness in Brahman is the meal.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes in a quiet room and notice each time your attention reaches outward for a screen, a snack or a task, or inward for a worry or a replay. 2. Each time, ask quietly: what is this reaching for? 3. Do not scold yourself. Just name it, such as 'wanting company' or 'wanting to be done'. 4. Before sleep, say one line of thanks to Krishna for what is already enough today.

A retired schoolteacher spends her first Sunday evening after retirement drifting from room to room. She opens the fridge without hunger, checks her phone, then starts replaying an old argument with a colleague. Nothing is wrong, yet she cannot settle. The verse reads this as wandering both outside and within, and it asks what the wandering is for. She might stop in the doorway and name the want: to feel useful, or to be seen. Then she might put the phone down, sit, and let that want be named without feeding it. The restlessness often eases once it is understood. Ordinary experience bears this out: after a good meal the search for snacks stops. The verse does not promise that her loneliness, her grief for the classroom or any real worry will vanish. It does not replace a doctor if the restlessness is constant, with poor sleep or low mood. It also describes a fullness that the text places in Brahman, which a few minutes of quiet will not produce. It names the direction, and it explains why the roaming has no end while the hunger is unnamed.
