By keeping close company with sattva, the sage overcomes rajas and tamas. Then, steady and indifferent to even that, with a settled mind, he overcomes sattva too. Freed from the gunas, the living self leaves its life as a separate self and reaches me.

Four words carry this. Sattva, from sat, being, is the guna of clarity and lightness. Samsevana is keeping close company with something, living beside it daily. Nairapekshya is not looking to something for support, from apeksha, expectation. Shanta-dhi is a settled mind, one that has stopped churning. Krishna gives Uddhava a method in two stages. First, the sage lives near sattva, in clean food, quiet places, steady work and clear thought, and so overcomes restless rajas and heavy tamas. Second, the same sage, now steady, overcomes sattva itself by no longer leaning on it. Calm is a better state than agitation or dullness, but it is still a guna and still a tie. When the sage needs nothing, not even peace, the three have no hold. Then the jiva, the living being that took itself to be a separate self, lets go of that idea and comes to Krishna. This answers the question the earlier verses leave open. If everything is made of the gunas, how does one get free of them? Krishna says to use the best of them, then put it down. The commentators read the last step as giving up attachment to sattva, not giving up clarity.

Builders put up scaffolding to raise a wall. They climb it daily and trust it with their weight. When the wall stands, they take the scaffolding down, and the wall does not fall. Sattva is the scaffolding, useful until the work is done. Leaving it is not abandoning it carelessly. The wall was never meant to be the scaffold.

1. At the next restless or heavy moment today, name it quietly to yourself: restless or dull. 2. Choose one clear remedy and keep it ten minutes: a slow walk, a glass of water, or tidying one shelf. 3. When you feel clear, notice whether you want to hold on to that feeling or fear losing it. 4. Go on to the next task without trying to keep the calm. See what changes.

A retired teacher takes up a morning walk and, within weeks, sleeps better and feels settled. Then a neighbour starts drilling at seven, and she is furious. She is angry about the noise, and angrier that it spoiled her peace. Krishna's teaching has two steps for her. First, keep the habits that make her steady: the walk, regular meals, enough sleep. Ordinary experience agrees that a rested, fed body makes patience easier. Second, notice that she has begun to depend on the peace itself. She cannot demand that the morning stay quiet. If she can meet the drilling steadily, her calm no longer depends on conditions. Krishna's own words go further than this, to the living self leaving its separateness and reaching him. That is the text's teaching about where the path ends, and a walk cannot show it. The teaching does not promise the drilling will stop, that irritation will never rise, or that steadiness replaces help for persistent low mood or poor sleep, for which a doctor is the right person.
