These turnings of birth and passage in a person are bound by the gunas and by action. The one who has conquered these gunas, born of the mind, dear friend, and who stands firm in me through the yoga of devotion, comes to my own nature. Therefore, having gained this human body, the birthplace of knowledge and lived understanding, let the discerning shake off attachment to the gunas and worship me. Free of attachment, wise, alert, master of the senses, let him worship me.

Three words carry the teaching. Samsriti means the going-around of birth and death, from a root meaning to flow. Guna means a strand, one thread of the rope that ties us: sattva, rajas and tamas. Bhakti means loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in. Krishna first names what binds. The round of births is held together by the gunas and by the actions they drive. Then he says who gets free: the one who has conquered the gunas. He adds that they are born of the mind, so the conquering is done where they arise. That person, devoted to Krishna and steady in him, reaches Krishna's own state of being. Then comes the reason this birth matters. A human body is where knowledge, and the understanding that makes knowledge lived, can take root. So the discerning are asked to shake off clinging to the gunas and turn to Krishna. The last line gives the marks of such a person: unattached, wise, alert, with the senses in hand. Uddhava has just heard that every food, place, act and faith is made of the gunas. The question behind that is whether anyone can get out. Krishna answers that the way out is open, and that it runs through devotion and through this life. The commentators read the human body as a rare and short chance. What it asks of the listener is attention now, not later: loosen the grip, keep the senses in hand, and keep Krishna as the centre.

After a walk through a dry field, burrs cover a wool coat. They are not part of the cloth. They only caught on it. Pulled off one by one, they leave the coat whole. The gunas are the burrs of attachment, and devotion is the steady hand that picks them off.

1. Tonight, pick one habit that grips you, such as scrolling, snacking or arguing. Notice when the pull begins. 2. Name it quietly: restless, dull or calm. That is a guna showing itself. 3. Wait ten slow breaths before acting on it. 4. Then spend two minutes giving the day to the one you love as God, by name, picture or simple words. 5. Repeat tomorrow at the same hour.

A retired schoolteacher lies awake at two in the morning. At the family dinner, a nephew made a joke at her expense. Now she is composing a sharp reply in her head and reaching for her phone. Her heart is racing, and every reason for the reply feels solid. The verse would change the moment in steps. First she sees that the heat is a mood, a pull that rose in her own mind and is not the nephew's doing. Ordinary experience agrees that tired people lose restraint, so she knows this hour is a poor judge. Second, she holds her hand back from the phone. That is the senses mastered, in the verse's sense. Third, she turns her attention to Krishna, offering the hurt instead of feeding it. By morning the reply may look different, or unnecessary. The verse does not promise the sting will vanish, or that the nephew was not unkind. It also does not replace a doctor if the sleeplessness and the racing heart are a habit and not a bad night.
