Substance, place, fruit, time, knowledge, action, the doer, faith, one's state, one's form, one's resolve: all of it is threefold, made of the gunas. Every state of being is made of the gunas, and stands under the watch of the person and the unmanifest. Whatever is seen, whatever is heard, whatever is turned over in thought by the mind, O best of men.

Krishna has been sorting the world into sattva, rajas and tamas: dwellings, doers, faith, food, happiness. Here he gathers it into one sweep. He names eleven things: substance, place, fruit, time, knowledge, action, the doer, faith, one's state, one's form, one's resolve. All are traigunya, threefold. Guna means a strand, as in a rope. The claim is that each of these is twisted from the same three strands. Then he widens it. Every bhava, every state of being, is made of the gunas. Two words explain what stands behind them. Purusha is the person, the knower. Avyakta is the unmanifest, what has not yet shown itself, the ground the gunas unfold from. Adhishthita means stood over or presided over, so both watch over the play of the gunas. The commentators read the unmanifest as prakriti, nature in its unshown state. Last, he says what "everything" covers: what is seen, what is heard, what is thought about. That is eye, ear and mind, so nothing the mind can reach is left out. This is why it is taught here. Uddhava wanted to know how to tell the gunas apart, and Krishna shows the list is complete. The sorting is not about a few things. It covers everything the mind can touch, thought included.

A rope is twisted from three threads. Cut it anywhere, at the near end or the far end, and the same three threads show in the cut. Krishna's picture of the world is like this: every thing, act and thought is a cut length of one rope.

1. Tonight, take five minutes with a pen and paper. 2. Write down one thing you saw today, one thing you heard, and one thing you kept thinking about. 3. Beside each, write whether it left you clearer, restless, or dull. 4. Do not fix anything. Only notice that all three had a colour, and that the colour came with them.

A man sits on his balcony on a Sunday evening, flat and irritable. The tea tastes stale. His neighbour's radio sounds loud and the street looks grey. That morning the same street looked friendly. The verse would slow him down at one point. He would not ask whether the street is bad. He would ask what colour his own mind is wearing. Krishna teaches that sight, sound and thought are all made of the gunas. So a heavy mood is not a verdict on the world. It is a strand showing in everything at once. He could then notice that he slept badly, ate late, and has been alone since noon. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: the same street looks different to a tired mind and a rested one. The verse does not say the mood is imaginary, and it does not lift the mood. Where low spirits last for weeks, a doctor is the right person to see. It also does not say what to do next. It only says that nothing the mind reaches is free of colour.
