Meaning · English

Arjuna said: What marks the one whose intellect is steady, who stands in divine consciousness, Keshava? How does such an enlightened person speak? How do they sit? How do they walk?

Arjuna is asking a question, and the verse is his view in that moment, not Krishna's teaching. Two terms carry it. Sthita-prajna means one whose prajna, understanding or settled intellect, is sthita, standing firm. Samadhi here means a mind gathered and fixed in divine consciousness. Keshava is a name for Krishna, the one who killed the demon Keshi. Arjuna has just heard Krishna describe an intellect that crosses delusion and stays steady. He wants to see it. So he asks what such a person says, how they sit, how they move. He assumes the inner state must show on the outside, in speech and in posture. The reason is practical. He is a man in doubt, and a goal he cannot picture is hard to aim at. He asks for signs he could recognise in another and test in himself. The verse asks nothing of the listener yet. It only opens the question that Krishna answers next. Shankara reads the question as a request for the marks of someone fixed in knowledge of the Self. Ramanuja takes the steady person as one whose mind rests in the self, reached through disciplined action. Madhva takes the steadiness as firm knowledge of the Supreme.

A nervous passenger in a shaking aircraft watches the flight attendant. She speaks evenly, sits down without hurry, and walks the aisle as if the floor were level. The passenger reads the weather from her. Arjuna does the same: he cannot see a steady mind, so he asks how it shows in voice, seat and stride.

1. Today, think of one person you know who stays level when things go wrong. Recall how they speak, sit and walk. 2. Write three plain observations, for example: lowers their voice, pauses before answering, does not hurry. 3. This week, at one tense moment, try just one of those, such as pausing for a breath before you answer. Afterwards, note what changed, if anything.

A young apprentice stands in a restaurant kitchen at the lunch rush when the gas runs out. Everyone is shouting. The head cook speaks low, tells each person one task, sits down for a moment to think, then walks to the back store without hurrying. The apprentice wants what she has, and cannot say what it is. Arjuna's question fits that moment. He treats steadiness as something with visible marks, which can be watched, named and learned from. The apprentice could stop asking whether she is calm and ask what she does: how her voice sounds, whether she pauses, where she puts her hands. Ordinary experience confirms that a hurried body tends to push the mind to hurry as well. The limit is plain. Watching a steady person does not make the watcher steady, and the verse only asks the question. The text gives its answer in the verses that follow, and it places that steadiness inside the person more than in the manner.
