When a person discards all the selfish desires of the mind, Arjun, and is satisfied in the self alone by the purified mind, then he is said to be one of steady intellect.

Arjun has just asked what a person of steady wisdom is like. Krishna starts from the inside, with two words. Kama is desire that grabs for something to fill a lack. Sthita-prajna means a mind whose understanding stands fixed and does not shake. Krishna says the fixed mind is found when every such desire, all of them and not only the worst, has been let go from the mind. Atman, the self, is what remains and what the person rests in. The verse adds that the mind doing the resting is purified, so the satisfaction is not a mood or a numbness. It comes because the mind no longer sends the person out to fetch happiness from things. Krishna calls this person steady because nothing outside is holding the other end of their peace. Shankara reads the self here as the Atman, whose fullness needs no object. Ramanuja reads the contentment as coming from knowing the self as distinct from the body and mind. Madhva ties it to the knowledge of the Lord, which makes the mind pure enough to be satisfied. All three agree on the order: desires go, the mind clears, and then contentment is found within.

A walker carries a full water bottle on a hot road and passes every tea stall without a glance. The stalls are still there and the day is still hot. The bottle stands for the contentment held in the self, and the stalls stand for the desires that no longer pull.

1. Tonight, before sleep, write down one thing you wanted today that you did not need, such as a purchase, a compliment or a reply. 2. Next time a want rises, wait one full minute before acting. Notice where it sits in the body. 3. In that minute, ask whether you are lacking something now or only imagining a lack. 4. Sit quietly for five minutes this week with nothing in your hands, and notice what remains when nothing is asked of you.

A young man stands at his cousin's wedding as the cousin steps out of a new car. A small, hot wanting rises in him: a car, a bigger salary, a different life. Krishna's teaching changes the moment in steps. First the man sees the wanting as a movement of his mind, not a fact about his life. Next he notices that the thing he lacks was not on his mind an hour ago. Then he looks for what is already steady in him, such as his breath, his plain gladness at seeing family, and the work he has done. From there he can enjoy the wedding without being pulled out of it. Ordinary experience confirms that wanting grows louder when we compare ourselves with others. The verse does not promise that the wanting never comes, that the man's real needs for money or work stop mattering, or that it eases grief or hardship. Where worry or low mood has become heavy, a doctor is the right person to ask.
