Calm in Pain and Pleasure

Meaning · English
One whose mind is not shaken amid miseries, who has no craving amid pleasures, and who is free from attachment, fear and anger, is called a sage of steady wisdom.
Krishna gives Arjuna a portrait with three layers. Anudvigna means not shaken up; udvega is the churning of a mind hit by trouble. Vigata-spriha means craving has gone out of it; spriha is the reaching hand that wants more pleasure. Then three named binders: raga, attachment, the sticky pull toward what pleases; bhaya, fear of losing it; krodha, anger when something blocks it. The sage is called muni, one who has gone quiet inside and reflects. Krishna is answering Arjuna's question about how a steady person can be recognized. Suffering and pleasure still arrive. What changes is the grip: pain does not set the mind spinning, and pleasure does not leave it hungry for the next one. The reason lies in the three binders. Attachment breeds fear, fear breeds anger, and a mind caught in them cannot see clearly. Krishna asks Arjuna to know what steadiness looks like so he can aim at it. On the commentators: Shankara reads this as the mark of one who knows the Self, a sign rather than a technique. Ramanuja reads it as the fruit of disciplined action and knowledge of the self, offered to God. Madhva places the steadiness in devotion to Vishnu as supreme.
A boat with a deep, heavy keel sails through a squall. Waves still lift it and drop it, and spray still soaks the deck, but it does not roll over. The sage is that boat: pain and pleasure are the weather, and the steadiness below the waterline keeps the mind upright.
1. Today, pick one small good thing and one small irritation, such as a kind message and a delayed bus. 2. For each, stop for about ten seconds and name what the mind is doing: wanting more, fearing loss, or turning angry. 3. Say the name quietly, for example 'wanting more' or 'getting angry', and then carry on with what you were doing. 4. At night, think back over the day for two minutes and note which of the three came up most often.
A taxi driver gets an unexpectedly large tip at the station, and within the hour a parking fine is tucked under his wiper. The tip lifts him; he starts hoping the next fare will be as good. The fine hits him; he feels hot in the face and curses the warden. By evening he is worn out from swinging up and down. The verse's picture of a steady mind would change that hour step by step. He would feel the lift and let it be only that, without reaching for more. He would see the fear of a lean week rising behind the anger at the fine. He would pay it, and drive on with his judgment intact. Ordinary experience confirms that a body in alarm breathes fast and sees narrowly, so calm helps clear thinking. The limit is plain: Krishna's portrait does not promise that the fine stops stinging, that money worries vanish, or that real grief and illness will not hurt. It describes a mind that is not carried away by them.
