The Count of Asanas
Gheranda Samhita 2.1
Meaning · English
Gheranda said: As many as there are living creatures, so many are the asanas. Eighty-four lakhs of them, eight million four hundred thousand, have been spoken by Shiva.
This is the opening verse of the chapter on asana, and it gives no instruction yet. It sets the scale. Gheranda is the teacher in this book, and he is speaking to his student Chanda. Start with the word. Asana comes from a root meaning to sit, so it is first of all a seat, a way of settling the body. Later in the hatha tradition the word covers more than sitting, but here it still means the postures the texts describe. The verse makes two claims. The first is about number: the asanas are as many as there are living creatures. The Sanskrit pairs jiva, a living being, with jantu, a creature, so nothing that lives is left out. Each kind of being is paired with a seat. The verse does not say why. It states the match and moves on. The second claim gives the figure and the source. A lakh is one hundred thousand, and eighty-four lakhs is eight million four hundred thousand. Gheranda says Shiva spoke them. In the tradition Shiva is the first teacher of yoga, so the claim is that the postures come from the source of the teaching and are not a human invention. The number is not a list anyone could learn, and the verse does not ask that. Its purpose is to show that the field is vast, so that the next verses can narrow it. It asks nothing of the practitioner yet except to read on, knowing the text will choose.
A small girl at the zoo crouches low with her knees wide and says she is a frog. Then she is a heron on one leg. Children do this without being taught, and the old verse sees the same thing: the body can take on a great many shapes, and many of them resemble the creatures around us. Today's understanding agrees with the general idea that people can use their bodies in a wide range of positions, and that moving through varied positions is part of keeping joints and muscles usable. It does not support the figure. Eight million four hundred thousand is a traditional round number, not a count of distinct postures. The human skeleton allows far fewer clearly different seated shapes, and nobody has catalogued them. Modern biology also counts living species by other methods, and those estimates are uncertain and revised often, so the verse's match between seats and creatures is the tradition's way of speaking, not something that can be checked. There is also no evidence that a posture belongs to any particular animal or conveys anything of its character. The verse's claim that Shiva spoke them is a statement of faith and sits outside what physiology can test.
