Heels Stacked, Spine Level

Gheranda Samhita 2.11

Meaning · English

The left heel at the root of the anus, the right heel placed above it. Body, head and neck kept level in one line. This is muktasana, the freed seat, and it gives siddhi.

The name comes from mukta, 'freed' or 'released', and asana, 'seat'. It is the freed seat. The verse does not say what the pose frees the sitter from, so nothing more should be added to the name. The instructions are short. Gheranda tells Chanda to set the left heel at the payu-mula, the root of the anus, which means the base of the trunk where the body meets the floor. The right heel goes above the left, so the two heels sit one over the other along the midline. Then the body, head and neck are made sama, level or even, so that trunk, neck and head stand in one straight line. The verse names three things to keep level because a seat only works if the upright column is balanced on it. The verse gives no breath, no hand position, no gaze and no count. It gives only the foot placement and the straight line above it. Any breathing instruction a lesson adds is modern teaching, not this text. The only reason the verse offers is its closing claim: the pose is siddhidam, a giver of siddhi. Siddhi means accomplishment or attainment. The verse leaves it undefined. The text asks the practitioner to hold a settled, upright seat with the heels stacked, and it promises accomplishment from that, not from effort or force.

A retired tailor who sat cross-legged on his shop floor for forty years lowers himself to the mat and finds the heel-stacked seat harder than he expected. His hips are stiff and one knee complains. That is common. Sitting on the floor with the legs folded takes hip rotation that many adults have lost, and the knees pay when the hips cannot give. What holds up today is the plain part: an upright, even spine with the head over the pelvis is a comfortable, low-effort way to sit still, and sitting still with a steady posture is a reasonable base for quiet attention. Teachers also differ on the foot placement. Some keep the heels close to the perineum as the verse says, and others soften it to a loose cross-legged seat. Pressing a heel hard into the perineum can cause numbness or discomfort, and a forced fold can strain the knees. Siddhi has no modern counterpart. It is the tradition's claim, and no measurement speaks for or against it.
