Swift as Thought

Rama Raksha Stotram 33

Meaning · English

I take refuge in Rama's messenger: swift as thought, fast as the wind, master of his senses, foremost of the wise, son of the Wind, chief of the monkey troops.

The hymn turns from Rama to the one who carries his word, Hanuman. He moves as quickly as thought, and as fast as the wind, his father. Speed is only half of it. He has mastered his own senses, so nothing pulls him off course. He is the wisest among the wise. He leads the monkey bands. Yet the title that gathers all of this comes last: Rama's messenger. The singer takes refuge in him.

Picture a courier on a motorbike, threading through city traffic with a sealed envelope in his jacket. He is fast, but the shop windows and street food stalls do not slow him, and he never opens the letter. That is the shape here: quickness held in check by discipline, all of it in service of someone else's message.
