Lotus-Eyed Shelter
Rama Raksha Stotram 32
Meaning · English
I take refuge in Sri Ramachandra, the delight of the world, steady on the battlefield, lotus-eyed, lord of Raghu's line, compassion in living form, a mine of mercy.
The line is a string of names, each showing a different side of one person, and it ends in a single act: I take refuge. He delights the whole world. He stays steady where battle is fiercest. His eyes are like lotuses. He heads the family of Raghu, his royal line. Then come two names about kindness: he is compassion given a shape, and he is the place mercy comes from, the way a mine holds ore. Having named him this way, the singer goes to him for shelter.
A traveller caught in the rain looks at a house before knocking. Solid walls, a lamp burning in the window, a door left open. Each detail tells him he will be safe inside. The names work the same way: steadiness under pressure, a gentle face, a heart full of mercy. Having seen them, the singer knocks: I take refuge.
