Rama and His Circle

Rama Raksha Stotram 31

Meaning · English

I bow to the joy of Raghu's line, who has Lakshmana on his right, Janaka's daughter on his left, and Maruti standing before him.

Rama is placed by where the people closest to him stand. On his right is Lakshmana, his brother. On his left is Sita, named here as Janaka's daughter, after her father. In front is Maruti, son of the wind, a name Hanuman carries through his father. The one bowed to is Raghunandana, the joy of Raghu's family line. Rama is not pictured alone. He is pictured the way he is known, already surrounded.

Think of a wedding photo on a living-room shelf. The groom sits in the middle, his brother at one shoulder, his bride at the other, a close friend crouched in front. Nobody needs a caption. You know who he is by who is around him. The verse finds Rama the same way, by the three nearest him.
