Equal to a Thousand
Rama Raksha Stotram 38
Meaning · English
Saying Rama, Rama, Rama, I take delight in Rama, who delights the mind. Fair-faced one, the name of Rama is equal to the thousand names.
The speaker says the name three times and calls Rama his delight, the one who pleases the mind. In the original, the word for 'I delight' and the name Rama come from the same root, so the line plays on rejoicing as it praises. Then comes the claim: saying Rama is worth as much as reciting the thousand names, the long list of the god's titles. The listener is called 'fair-faced one'. Tradition hears Shiva speaking to Parvati.
Picture a single banknote beside a jar of loose coins worth exactly the same amount. The jar takes time to count out, coin by coin. The note carries the whole sum in one slip of paper. The thousand names are the jar, recited one by one. The single name of Rama is the note, the same value held in one word.
