The dharma you once taught, whose mark is devotion to you, for all who keep the conduct of their class and stage of life, and even for every two-legged being: tell me how, when it is practised, devotion to you can arise in people through their own duty, lotus-eyed one. You are able to explain it.
Uddhava is asking a question, and the question holds three key words. Dharma comes from dhri, to hold up: the duty that keeps a life and a society standing. Bhakti comes from bhaj, to share in: loving devotion, a sharing in the one loved. Svadharma is one's own duty, the part that belongs to this person in this place. Varna and ashrama name the Bhagavata's two frames for duty: the social classes of its age and the four stages of life. This is the Bhagavata's picture of the society of its age, not a rule of birth for today. Now the clauses. Uddhava recalls that Krishna has already taught a dharma whose mark is devotion to himself. He says it is meant for everyone who keeps the conduct of a class and stage, and in the end for every human being. Then he asks how: by what manner of practising does devotion to Krishna grow in people, through their own duty? He ends by saying Krishna alone is able to explain it. He asks because duty and devotion can seem like two separate things, one for the household and one for the shrine. Uddhava wants to know whether they are one road. He is also asking for someone who will soon be gone. What the verse asks of a listener is the question itself: that one's ordinary duty be looked at as the place where devotion is meant to grow.
A person climbing a staircase keeps climbing by putting a foot on the step directly beneath them, not the one above or below. Duty fitted to one's stage is that step, and each step taken honestly is how the climb toward Krishna goes on, one ordinary footfall after another.
1. Tonight, name in one line the stage you are in now: for example, student, parent of small children, caring for an elder, or retired. 2. Choose one plain duty of that stage you have been putting off, and do it tomorrow for ten minutes. 3. As you begin, say silently, "This is for you, Krishna." 4. Afterwards, notice for a minute whether the task felt lighter or heavier than usual.
A retired schoolteacher wakes on his first Monday with no bell to answer. He sits with his tea and feels useless, as if his duties ended with his job. The question Uddhava asks gives him a different start. Krishna's teaching is that each stage of life carries its own duty, and that this duty is where devotion grows. So the morning stops being empty. He asks what belongs to him at this stage: a grandchild's homework, the neighbour who lives alone, an hour of quiet prayer he never had time for. He picks one, does it fully, and offers it to Krishna in a word. By evening the day has a shape, and the shape came from his own stage, not from the old job. Ordinary experience agrees that a day with one clear task is easier to bear than a day with none. The teaching does not promise that the loss of a working life will stop hurting. It does not replace a doctor if low mood settles in and stays, and it does not say the answer comes quickly.
