Seven Wheels, Deathless Axle

Atharva Veda 19.53.2

Meaning · English

This Time draws seven wheels; seven are its hubs, and deathlessness is its axle. Bringing all these worlds to light, Time goes forth, the first god.

Time is pictured pulling seven wheels, each turning on its own hub. All of them share one axle, and that axle is deathlessness. The parts that spin come and go, but what they turn on does not die. As it rolls, Time brings every world into view. The word for this can also mean anointing, and readers take it either way. Some later readers count the seven as the seasons or the sun's rays. Then comes the plain claim: Time moves on as the first god.

A wall clock's hands sweep round all day, yet the small pin at their centre never goes anywhere. The second, minute and hour hands all turn on that one still point. The seven wheels are everything in the world that turns and passes. The axle is the deathless centre they all ride on.
