The Brimming Pitcher
Atharva Veda 19.53.3
Meaning · English
A full pitcher is placed on Time. We see him, being in many forms. He faces all these worlds. Him they call Time in the highest heaven.
A pitcher filled to the brim rests on Time. Whatever is full and whole is held up by Time and carried by it. The seer then says we see Time in many forms. A dawn, a season and a lifetime are each Time appearing. Time faces every world and is turned toward each one. The same Time we meet in many shapes carries one name in the highest heaven. Some later readers take the pitcher as the year, filled with its days and seasons.
Picture a tray of steel tumblers of water set out in morning sunlight. Each tumbler holds its own small bright sun, and no two look quite alike. There is still only one sun in the sky. Time is like that sun: met in many separate moments down here, and one thing above.
