Father Who Becomes Son
Atharva Veda 19.53.4
Meaning · English
He alone gathered the worlds together; he alone went round them on every side. Being their father, he became their son. So no brilliance stands higher than this.
Time does two things to the worlds. It draws them together into one whole, and it travels all the way round them, so nothing lies outside its circuit. Then comes a riddle: Time is their father and also their son. Every world comes out of Time, so Time stands before it. Yet Time keeps arriving after each thing, born again in its days and years. The word for brilliance means fiery splendour, the shine of power. Because Time both begets and follows, nothing outshines it.
An old mango tree drops its fruit, and the stone grows into a new tree beside it. Stand in that orchard and ask which tree is parent and which is child; each one is both. Time stands to the worlds that way: it brings them forth, and it rises again out of them.
