Begetter of Sky and Earth

Atharva Veda 19.53.5

Meaning · English

Time brought forth that sky up there, and Time these earths. In Time, set moving, what has been and what is yet to be stand spread out.

Bhrigu names Time as the one who brought the sky into being, and the earths too. The word is plural, because the seers often speak of earth as more than one. Then he turns from space to the span of years. Everything that has happened and everything still to come is held within Time. It does not sit there still. It has been sent moving, and it opens out and stands in its place. Time is the source of the world and also the room it unfolds in.

A cloth merchant pulls a bolt of fabric across the counter. The lengths already drawn lie flat and open; the rest is still wound on the roll, waiting. It is one cloth. Time holds past and future the same way: what has been lies spread out, what will be is still rolled, and the pull keeps it moving.
