Sun Blazing, Eye Seeing

Atharva Veda 19.53.6

Meaning · English

Time brought forth all that thrives; in Time the sun blazes. In Time, truly, all beings are held; in Time the eye looks out and sees.

Time is named as the maker of what flourishes. The word can mean well-being and plenty, or simply things coming to exist, and readers take it both ways. Then three things are placed inside Time: the sun's heat, the whole crowd of living creatures, and the act of seeing. Nothing burns, lives or looks outside it. The line moves from the largest light in the sky down to one eye, and keeps the same container for both.

Picture one house at night under a single roof. In the kitchen a stove burns, in the rooms a family sleeps, and at a window someone looks out at the dark. Three different things, all under the same cover. Time is that roof: the sun's blaze, every living being and each act of seeing go on beneath it.
