Mind, Breath and Name
Atharva Veda 19.53.7
Meaning · English
In Time the mind, in Time the breath, in Time the name is held. With Time's coming, all these creatures are glad.
Three things make up a living being. Mind thinks and wants. Breath keeps the body alive. Name is how a person or thing is known and called. Each of these is held in Time, set there and kept there. None of them stands outside it. The second line turns from holding to arriving. When Time comes, creatures are glad. The hour, the season, the moment a thing is due: each brings gladness only by coming in its turn.
Think of a crowded station platform before the train. People shift their feet, check the board and grip their bags. Then the train pulls in, and the whole platform loosens and moves at once. Nothing on the platform changed except that the hour arrived. That is the second line: creatures are glad because Time has come.
