Lord Over Everything

Atharva Veda 19.53.8

Meaning · English

In Time is fervour, in Time the eldest, in Time the sacred word is gathered. Time is lord of all, who was the father of Prajapati.

Three things the Vedic world held highest are placed inside Time. Fervour is the heat of discipline by which seers were said to see and gods to create. The eldest is whatever came first and so ranks first; the word can mean both oldest and greatest. The sacred word is the power held in prayer and hymn. All three rest in Time, gathered there. Then the claim widens. Time rules everything, and stands even before Prajapati, the lord of creatures who in other hymns makes the world.

A village knows its well as the place water comes from. Dig beneath it and there is the spring that filled the well before anyone drew from it. Prajapati is the well, named as the source of creatures. Time is the spring under it, older, and still feeding everything drawn up.
