Atharva Veda 19.53.9
तेनेषितं तेन जातं तदु तस्मिन् प्रतिष्ठितम्। कालो ह ब्रह्म भूत्वा बिभर्ति परमेष्ठिनम्
Meaning · English
By it this was sent forth, by it this was born, and in it this stands firm. Time, becoming the sacred power, carries the one who stands highest.
Three things are said of the world. Time sent it out, Time gave it birth, and it rests on Time now. Its origin, its birth and its present footing all belong to Time. Then the claim climbs higher. The one who stands highest is a title of Prajapati, the lord of creatures who makes the world. Even he is carried. Time takes on the sacred power at the heart of the hymns and holds him up. Some readers take that power as the Vedic word, others as reality itself.
Picture a harbour at high tide. The largest ship, the one every other boat steers around, sits on the same water as a rowing dinghy. The water brought it in and keeps it afloat. Time is that water. The one who stands highest, the maker of creatures, is carried on it like every small boat.

उसी ने इसे भेजा, उसी से यह जन्मा, और उसी में यह दृढ़ टिका है। काल ही पवित्र शक्ति बनकर सबसे ऊँचे खड़े हुए को धारण करता है।
संसार के विषय में तीन बातें कही जाती हैं। काल ने उसे भेजा, काल ने उसे जन्म दिया, और अब वह काल पर ही टिका है। उसका उद्गम, उसका जन्म और उसका वर्तमान आधार, सब काल के ही हैं। फिर बात और ऊँची चढ़ती है। सबसे ऊँचे खड़ा रहने वाला प्रजापति की उपाधि है, जो प्राणियों का स्वामी है और संसार को रचता है। उसे भी धारण किया जाता है। काल सूक्तों के हृदय में बसी पवित्र शक्ति का रूप लेकर उसे थामे रखता है। कुछ पाठक उस शक्ति को वैदिक वाणी मानते हैं, तो कुछ स्वयं परम सत्य।
ज्वार के समय किसी बंदरगाह की कल्पना करो। सबसे बड़ा जहाज़, जिससे बचकर हर दूसरी नाव निकलती है, उसी जल पर टिका है जिस पर एक छोटी डोंगी। जल ही उसे भीतर लाया और जल ही उसे तैराए रखता है। काल वही जल है। सबसे ऊँचे खड़ा रहने वाला, प्राणियों का रचयिता, हर छोटी नाव की तरह उसी पर बहता है।
